Introduction
The first Met High School was opened in Providence, Rhode Island in 1999; five years later the San Diego Met opened its doors to new and eager to learn students. The San Diego MET is one of the many Met schools around the country. This school is located right in the center of the Mesa College campus in the upper F-200 building.
On March 4, 2004, the San Diego Unified School Board of Education formalized a partnership with the San Diego Community College District and the Big Picture Company for the establishment of the San Diego Metropolitan Regional Career and Technical High School. We are an alternative middle college high school located on the campus of San Diego Mesa College. The San Diego Met is a Title I school; more than half of the students qualify for the Free and Reduced Priced Meals program. The population of the San Diego Met is ethnically diverse, with 46% Hispanic, 23% African American, 20% White, 6% Asian/Pacific Islander, 4% Filipino, and 1% American Indian. More than 75% of the students will be the first in their family to attend college. The San Diego Met is one of the 60+ small high schools in the United States, Australia, and Europe that is based on the Big Picture philosophy that a child’s interests and passions are the key to his/her high school education and life long learning.
The mission of San Diego Met is to prepare students for college and the workforce through active learning, academic rigor, and community involvement. The Met model is based on the educational design from the Big Picture Company in Providence, Rhode Island, where internships, project based learning, exhibitions and college courses provide students with authentic learning embedded in career pathways. Relationships, relevance, and rigor provide a unique opportunity for students to excel in a nurturing yet challenging academic environment which is closing the achievement gap for our students.
The advisory is the nucleus of our school. It is the heart and soul of all Big Picture schools and is often described as the “home” and “second family” by students. An essential component of the success of our students is parent engagement. Parents/guardians have many opportunities to be involved at San Diego Met including School Site Council, District Advisory Committee, college presentations, special events, parent organizations, learning plan meetings, exhibitions, and in classrooms. Parents, staff and students view themselves as a collaborative team who work together for the success of San Diego Met students.
We have established a strong culture of college access and success for all of our students. Our accomplishments include excellent attendance rates in a comprehensive college preparatory environment which resulted in our first graduating class having a 100% pass rate on the CAHSEE, 98% completion of a-g requirements and 98% of our first graduates attending a two or four year college or university. We have met and surpassed our API/AYP targets every year, Through our partnership with Mesa College, students have the opportunity to earn up to 46 college credits during their high school career.(our first graduating class earned 673 college credits) Our highly successful Career and Technical Education program gives our students the opportunity to connect with the business community to explore their passions and interests by participating in internships.
San Diego Met is a small school where everyone is connected. This feeling of community creates a safe learning environment where academic rigor is evident and students can pursue their interests and passions. The school is founded on respect for individuality and diversity. Students, parents and staff support and learn from one another. The Met school brings together the San Diego Unified School District, Mesa College, Big Picture Company and the business community in partnership to educate and prepare students to be successful in a demanding and competitive future. This innovative partnership is giving Met students the tools they need as they advance through high school to college and to the world of work.
